Timeless portrait of bride and groom in Japanese Gardens at Point Defiance Park, by Wallflower Photography of Tacoma

Jessicca and Boyd’s wedding, on the last day of March, brought me to The Ruston Chapel (which at the time was called Divine Elegance Wedding Chapel) for the very first time. I drive by this cute church-turned-wedding venue often, since it’s near the main entrance to Point Defiance Park, a place I visit often for portrait sessions — and to bring our two little boys to the zoo, forest and/or beach. It’s a pretty intimate venue, but fully featured, with a sanctuary able to accommodate both their ceremony and reception, and a kitchen and getting-ready space in the back, plus a rec room with couches and TV for bored kids to entertain themselves.

The getting-ready space has the requisite large mirror, which I utilized extensively to get these next few photos. Then Jessicca’s dad came back for a long hug, just before the ceremony was to start.

In lieu of a guestbook, wedding guests wrote personal messages to the bride and/or groom on scraps of thick paper with artistically burned edges, and dropped them into a clear vase. Those little notes could later be bound into a really amazing scrapbook, I bet!

Here, Boyd and his best man — his dad — wait outside the front door for the ceremony to start. Jessicca was escorted into the ceremony by her son.

Ceremonies at The Ruston Chapel are nice and bright!

I love this pair of wedding ring photos: first, a detail photo of Boyd’s dad holding the box containing Jessicca’s wedding ring, and then Boyd’s big reaction after he realized he was putting her ring on the wrong hand!

After taking family photos in front of the altar inside, Jessicca, Boyd and I took this quick portrait in front of The Ruston Chapel, then hopped in their car and headed the quarter-mile to Point Defiance Park.

We stopped by the Japanese Gardens first, where I took the photo at the top of this post, plus several others. Then it was off to my favorite mossy section of forest, which is particularly vibrant during the rainy season — although we were fortunate to be rain-free on this day!

Back at The Ruston Chapel, Jessicca and Boyd ate, then took to the floor for their first dance as husband and wife.

In the rec room in back, I found these two girls taking a photo of themselves with a cell phone camera. Later, I decided to apply what we call a “selective color” effect to draw your eye to the cell phone screen, where I had focused my lens. These days, I rarely use selective color and other obvious Photoshop effects, but this was a great photo to dust the old favorite off for!

I love everyone’s reactions after a bridesmaid caught Jessicca’s bouquet at the end of the day.

Congrats Jessicca and Boyd!
