Portrait of bride and groom in Japanese Gardens at Point Defiance Park, Tacoma, Washington

We have our feature in Arches, the alumni magazine of the University of Puget Sound, to thank for helping us book our latest wedding at the Japanese Pagoda at Point Defiance Park. Robin, a fellow alumni, spotted our feature at the perfect time, just as she and Raj were beginning to plan their wedding.

And so we found ourselves at yet another beautiful Pagoda wedding on a perfect summer day (that kind of weather being a distant memory now). Robin and Raj’s arrivals were both delayed by traffic, so they ran downstairs to hurriedly dress and get out into the lower gardens for some pre-ceremony portraits.

Check out the sweet striped socks that Robin gave Raj!

Robin and Raj chose to stage their ceremony the way we recommend, which places the beautiful gardens as a backdrop to the ceremony and uses the huge staircase as built-in bleachers, with chairs at the base for family VIPs. Everyone got a kick out of the fist bump and pop that Raj and Robin’s dad exchanged to start the ceremony, including us!

Raj’s Indian heritage came into play when his mom ceremoniously gave Robin a sari, blessed by the minister and symbolizing welcoming of the bride into the groom’s family.

Laura and I, who are expecting our second son next month, gave each other matching looks of humor-horror as we watched the two little girls sit politely for their portrait while we nearly had to handcuff the two boys to their chairs. Are we in trouble or what?

This sweet little unstaged moment just afterward made it all worthwhile, though.

The front of the Pagoda, in front of the big brick fireplace, is one of the prettier indoor backdrops to first dances, toasts and cake cuttings in Tacoma. Those beautiful red velvet, coconut, chocolate, and raspberry lemonade cupcakes were from Hello Cupcake in downtown Tacoma.

As you can see, the party got going later in the evening — highlighted by some excellent lip-syncing into forks!
