Focal Point: Alumni photos

September 6th, 2011

The latest issue of Arches, the superb alumni magazine of Tacoma’s University of Puget Sound, appeared in our mailbox recently, and we were tickled as always to find one of our recent photos published in the reader-submitted Classmates section! This is from Kelsey and John’s wedding last December.

We often call these “Arches photos” because we photograph the weddings of a lot of Puget Sound grads — and because Laura and I are also Loggers and Arches subscribers. But we’ve done the same thing with alumni from other colleges, of course, and with the DJ’s help, they only take a minute or two to pull off. At a prearranged time during the cocktail hour or later in the reception, the DJ summons all alumni of the bride and/or groom’s college(s) for a quick portrait. We pull everyone into an attractive cluster, take the photo and release them back into the party. That’s what I did with Kelsey and John’s Arches photo, which features no less than 40 Puget Sound alumni in front of the student center at dusk!

I’ve taken dozens of alumni photos over nine years of Wallflower weddings, and my all-time favorite is the one below, which also appeared in Arches a few years ago. Gretchen, the bride, and I go back all the way to our freshman year at Puget Sound, and we shared many of the same friends. As a result, her Arches photo features most of my favorite people from college in what is, hands-down, the most fun “pose” in alumni photo history. I get a kick that the men are, for the most part, on top of the women — and that Mike is at the top of the pyramid instead of our bride!

I’d love to do more fun alumni photos like this one, but I don’t want to spring any human-pyramid poses on my clients unexpectedly, so please let me know ahead of time if you’d like to go for something crazy!
